Interlayer Cation Exchange Stabilizes Polar Perovskite Surfaces

Global optimization is used to study the structure of the polar KTaO3 (001) surface. It is found that cation exchange near the surface leads to the most stable structure. This mechanism is likely to be general to metal oxides containing cations of differing charge.

Interlayer Exchange Coupling

The extensive research done on interlayer exchange coupling in transition metal multilayers has resulted in a deep understanding of this coupling and a remarkable agreement between theoretical results and measurements. The coupling between two magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic spacer layer is mediated by the electrons of the spacer layer. The coupling, which oscillates in sign as a fu...

Cation Exchange Properties of Tetratitanic Acid with Interlayer Protons and of Titania with Surface Hydroxyl Protons*

Cation exchange properties of tetratitanic acid with interlayer protons were measured and compared to those of titania with surface hydroxyl protons using the Frumkin equation. Tetratitanic acid showed larger ion-exchange capacity and much higher activity than titania. The characteristics of exchangeable protons and intercalated cations are discussed to explain the different ion-exchange proper...

Interfacial Co nanolayers for enhancing interlayer exchange coupling in antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling media

Significant enhancement of the interlayer coupling strength has been achieved by depositing Co nanolayers on both sides of the Ru layer in a conventional CoCrPt/Ru/CoCrPt antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling structure. The interlayer coupling increases nearly linearly from 0.13 to 0.8 erg/cm and then levels off with an increase in Co thickness. Substrate bias was found to be very harm...

Factors that Influence Cation Segregation at the Surfaces of Perovskite Oxides

As the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) becomes more critical for development of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that operate at 500700 C, the correlation between the surface chemistry and electrochemical performance is important to understand and enable design of cathode materials with optimal surface chemistry. Recently we demonstrated that elastic and electrostatic interactions of the dopant ...
